Kedves Egyesült Királyságban élő Magyarok!

Mint az Egyesült Királyságban élő magyar, mint szülő, mint a helyi Magyar Iskola alapítója (2009) fordulok hozzátok. Valószínűleg sokan tisztában vagytok vele, hogy magyar nyelvből mint idegen nyelvből nem lehet GCSE vizsgát tenni. (A GCSE vizsgát a középiskola (secondary school) végén, Year 11-ben teszik le a gyerekek, 16 évesen.) Ez nagyjából a magyar alapszintű érettséginek felel meg. Sok nyelvből lehet, franciából, németből, lengyelből, kínaiból, urduból, punjabiból és még hosszan sorolhatnám, magyar nyelvből viszont nem.

Írásban megkérdeztünk néhány illetékest (exam board-ot), várható-e a közeljövőben, hogy a GCSE magyar nyelvből is elérhető lesz-e? A válasz tömör és elutasító volt. Az exam board-ok szerint magyar GCSE vizsgára NINCS IGÉNY az Egyesült Királyságban. Megkérdeztük, hogy ha mégis volna rá igény, hogyan tudjuk jelezni. Választ nem kaptunk.

Biztos vagyok benne, hogy ez nem igaz. Mi és gyerekeink a bizonyíték arra, hogy lenne igény magyar GCSE vizsgára.

Közel másfél évtizede élek az Egyesült Királyságban, és munkám során is nagyon sok magyar családdal találkozom. Ezeknek a gyerekeknek szerintem hatalmas motiváció lenne, hogy bizonyosan van egy érettségi tárgy, ahol kiválóan tudnak teljesíteni.

Kérem szépen, aki egyetért azzal, hogy jó volna, ha lehetne magyar nyelvből mint idegen nyelvből is GCSE vizsgát tenni, írja alá a petíciót, és ha lehet terjessze a szociális médiákon.

It is possible for children to take GCSE exams in many foreign languages in the UK (ie. French, German, Polish, Chinese, Urdu, Punjabi etc.), but there is no possibility for a Hungarian as a foreign language GCSE.

Hungarian is a unique language, not akin to other European languages such as the Latin, German or Slavic language groups. We believe being bilingual helps in many ways, and is an asset for the whole society. For children with Hungarian heritage keeping their identity helps their integration into society.

We the Hungarian community believe our children should have the possibility to take a GCSE in their language too. If speakers of many other remote and difficult languages can take a GCSE in their language, we don’t understand why Hungarians are denied this possibility. There are enough children in the UK who would like to take this exam as is shown by the emergence of a growing number of Hungarian Saturday and Sunday schools.

The Official Petition wording

I’m asking for your help as a Hungarian parent living in the UK, and also as the founder of the local Hungarian School. You may be aware that it is not possible to do a GCSE exam in Hungarian as a foreign language. (The GCSE exam is taken by the children at the end of secondary school, at age 16.) This is more or less the equivalent of the basic level “érettségi” examination. This can be done in many languages, such as French, German, Polish, Chinese, Urdu, Punjabi, and many more, but not in Hungarian.

We asked a couple of Exam Boards in writing, to see if they were planning to offer a Hungarian GCSE? The replies were brief and negative. In the opinion of the Exam Boards, there is NO NEED for a Hungarian GCSE in the United Kingdom. We asked then how we can let them know if there were a need? We have not received a reply.

I’m sure you would agree with me that this is not true. We and our children are the proof that there is a need for a Hungarian GCSE exam.

I’ve been living in the UK for almost 15 years, and I met many Hungarian families as part of my work. It would be a huge motivation for the children of our families to have a subject in which they are guaranteed to do well.
